Get Smart DVD Review
This remake does an excellent job of staying true to the tone and humor of the original show, while providing a fresh and exciting storyline and talented actors to captivate even those who never watched a single episode on TV.
Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart and Anne Hathaway as Agent 99 have a chemistry that is both hysterical and a joy to watch. Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson does his best to steal the show as “the Perfect Agent” 23, while the rest of the stellar supporting cast, including Alan Arkin as “the Chief”, Terence Stamp as Siegfried and James Caan as the President of the United States, do a wonderful job of contributing to the overall entertainment and fun of the movie.
Clever dialogue and nail-biting action sequences keep the story moving along at a good clip, while Carell’s slapstick is priceless. Whether searching out radioactive materials in a bakery in Russia or trying to halt the detonation of a nuclear bomb during a symphonic concert for the President, Agents 86 and 99 are up to the challenge and the audience is lucky to be along for the ride.
Overall, Get Smart is a great tongue-in-cheek homage to serious spy series like James Bond and is simply delightful to watch.
Except perhaps for young children, audiences of all ages will enjoy this action-packed comedic spy caper.
